How do I check transmission fluid?
It is not difficult to check transmission fluid if the car is automatic. What you want is clear, pink transmission fluid. If it's low, cover it up. If it is dark, smells burnt, or has small parts, you need to get it changed at a reliable auto repair shop.
Is it really important to check transmission fluid?
Yes it can be. Often, the symptoms you will feel from low or dirty transmission fluid will be the same as transmission problems. If you check fluid levels regularly and refill as necessary, you will know if there are any symptoms of a problem, it's not because fluid levels are low and you need to see a mechanic.

How do I know I have a transmission fluid leak?
The color of the transmission fluid is slightly pink - it will appear pink or red, or possibly more brown if the transmission fluid is dirty and needs to be replaced. When you feel the transmission fluid, it will be slick and oily on your fingers. It smells a lot like oil unless it's dirty, in which case it will smell like burnt. Transmission fluid usually leaks around the front or center of your vehicle, so if you find pools of reddish fluid, it is likely transmission fluid. Another clue is if your transmission is not working well in addition to a leak and you notice changes in the way it sounds when you change gears, or if shifting gears is not working well. In this case, you likely have a transmission fluid leak that is affecting how your transmission works.

For sanitary purposes only, although there is a working toilet and shower, we disabled the shower and toilet for limited use (for urine only.. excuse the graphic details!). This keeps the boat clean and odor free for all of our guests. Sinks can be used. Reservations are suspended in case of weather. Due to safety factors associated with boating and inclement weather, if the forecast shows rain, strong winds, etc., the host will communicate with the guest 24-48 hours in advance to mutually cancel/reschedule the reservation. No smoking in the boat cabin.
